چکیده

Electromagnetic (EM) wave scattering by many parallel infinite cylinders is studied asymptotically as a → 0, where a is the radius of the cylinders. It is assumed that the centers of the cylinders x̂m are distributed so that N (∆) = ln( 1 a ) ∫ ∆ N(x)dx[1 + o(1)], where N (∆) is the number of points x̂m = (xm1, xm2) in an arbitrary open subset of the plane xOy, the axes of cylinders are parallel to z-axis. The function N(x) ≥ 0 is a given continuous function. An equation for the self-consistent (limiting) field is derived as a → 0. The cylinders are assumed perfectly conducting. Formula for the effective refraction coefficient of the new medium, obtained by embedding many thin cylinders into a given region, is derived. The numerical results presented demonstrate the validity of the proposed approach and its efficiency for solving the many-body scattering problems, as well as the possibility to create media with negative refraction coefficients.

A Computer Modeling of Mie-Scattering by Spherical Droplets Within the Atmosphere

The Earth’s atmosphere is an environment replete with particles of differ-ent sizes with various refractive indices which affect the light radiation traveling through it. The Mie scattering theory is one of the well-known light scattering techniques ap-plicable to modeling of electromagnetic scattering from tiny atmospheric particles or aerosols floating in the air or within the clouds. In this...

] 2 1 D ec 2 00 3 Guiding optical flows by photonic crystal slabs made of dielectric cylinders

We investigate the electromagnetic propagation in two-dimensional photonic crystals, formed by parallel dielectric cylinders embedded a uniform medium. The frequency band structure is computed using the standard plane-wave expansion method, while the propagation and scattering of the electromagnetic waves are calculated by the multiple scattering theory. It is shown that within partial bandgaps...

Determination of the quantized topological magneto-electric effect in topological insulators from Rayleigh scattering

Topological insulators (TIs) exhibit many exotic properties. In particular, a topological magneto-electric (TME) effect, quantized in units of the fine structure constant, exists in TIs. Here, we theoretically study the scattering properties of electromagnetic waves by TI circular cylinders particularly in the Rayleigh scattering limit. Compared with ordinary dielectric cylinders, the scatterin...
